Newsletter 13: Essen meeting

A big welcome to all new developers!

We are planning a developer meeting at Friday evening of Essen Spiel, first going to a restaurant together and then playing prototypes.

Developing and publishing board games take time. If you are thinking about becoming a developer member you should be prepared to work with us for more than a year to see your game get printed, even if all goes smoothly. There are many steps to go through, and lastly it needs to fit into the release shedule of a publisher.

Best regards,

Cloudberry Games

Newsletter 12: Cloudberry Games is open!

Developer membership on the Cloudberry Games website is now open, which means that we are now officially opening for business! There are already many interesting projects in development, and we hope many more will come.

A picture and a short text for the latest changed games are now shown instead of the games list for non-developers. There is also a new presentation text added to the front page that includes screenshots.

We are happy to release it after the long development process and want to thank all beta testers for their help.

We look forward to work with you!

Newsletter 11: First game printed, new site running fine

Drupal the Card game is printed and ready, and the instruction video for it is up! It is a game that Rustan Håkansson made for the web design company NodeOne, that specializes in the content management system Drupal. The video features imitations of well-known Drupal community profiles, with Rustan starring as Dries Buytaert (the founder and project leader of the Drupal project). The rules are online.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJSU08LQ54o
Rules: http://nodeone.se/blogg/matts-hilden/drupal-the-card-game

It is a quick 5 minute game for 2-4 players, with some interesting concepts. Players choose 3 out of 6 drawn dual-purpose cards to keep, and plays the rest to the table. The cards on the table become modules, and the cards on your hand become websites. Players work together, secretly, on completing the modules. Completed modules may be used by any and all players for their sites. Players score for sites that are complete, as well as modules that they have helped the most with building. There is luck, but not much for such
a short game.

The game is produced by NodeOne, and will be given out for free at the Drupal Conference in San Francisco next week.

The new website is running fine since the change almost two months ago. Editing your games is much easier, and the overview is much improved. The release is looking to be coming along in May as planned.

Best regards,

Rustan Håkansson

Issue 10: Move x 2, change in membership

Nina and Rustan are preparing to move to Norrköping, close to Stockholm (still in Sweden). At the same time we are preparing to move the website to a new host. This will let us remove the limit of 100 MB of files per game (very restrictive for some projects with detailed graphics) and make some other improvements. Both of these will happen in the coming weeks. We apologize for the downtime to the website the move will cause.

The membership fee was planned to be €10 per year for developers. We have decided to reduce this to €5, as we believe it will still serve its purpose of keeping the signal to noise ratio high on the site.

Best regards,

Rustan Håkansson

Issue 9: After Essen, new project with other publishers

We are back from yet another fun Essen. Several of the games on the website were presented to and picked up for publication by other publishers.

Some of our gaming highlights from the show:

Jaipur
A brief history of the World
Dungeon Lords
Fabrikmanager
Fzzzt!
Hansa Teutonica
Assyria
And the pile of 18xx games Pontus ordered a looong time ago :)

During a meeting a new idea was developed. We will make it possible for established publishers to upload finished games, without licensing them to us. Anyone interested in the game will be able to read it and print it out to test, and come with feedback. Most sought for comments here will be unclear wording and translation issues. If a serious problem with the game is found, it might help the publisher to abort and not invest a lot of money in the print. Each game will have a time during which it is available, and a deadline for comments before the game will go to print.

For members, the reason to help with this is the same as with other projects on the site, that the game is interesting and it is fun to help with the development and to see new games before they are released.

For publishers, more eyes checking the material before print to spot errors is very useful. There will be no cost for this beyond a normal developer account (€10 per year), but the catch is that there might not be any feedback at all if no member found the game interesting.

Issue 8: New gamer, Essen, Physical game

Nina's and Rustan's son, Eli, was born a week ago. We welcome him to the world and hope he will grow up to become an avid gamer!

Combined with preparations for Essen, this means that time is a very valuable resource. At Essen we will show some of the games on the website to selected publishers, talk to old and new friends, test the latest news and generally have a good time as usual.

Johan Forsell has a mostly finished Zombie game, Rotten Death, on the website. It needs to be blind-tested. Johan has made a few copies that he can send to testers, anywhere in the world. Join the Rotten Death project to check the game out, and contact Johan if you want to receive a copy.

Best regards,

Issue 7: License, Beta, Essen

An end of summer update of what is happening at Cloudberry Games.

After discussions with the beta testers we have now put the latest draft of the license agreement for game authors that want to work with us online for all to see. It is currently on the front page, just below this piece of news. The reason for this unusual move (contracts are usually very secret) is that we want it to be as good as possible, and that we want to work together with authors to make it so. Comments are very welcome, from anyone that is interested (contact us through the website or by email).

August is here, and we are still not ready to open the site completely. Things often take longer time than planned, especially if you want to get things right. We have activated many more beta testers (currently 55 total), and have changed the policy for how new beta testers are activated: current testers can now recommend other users that are interested. We expect the beta to go on at least until Christmas. All active beta testers will have a free account at least until next summer.

We are getting ready for Essen Spiel. We will bring some games to promote to other publishers. If you are a beta tester and have a game you would like us to bring, and it will become ready to show in the coming month, please inform us as soon as possible. We will look through the games that are ready now and the ones that are coming and bring the ones we think are interesting for the publishers we will meet with.

Best regards,

Rustan Håkansson

Issue 6: Beta testing going on

A small update on what is happening.

Since a couple of weeks we have admitted a small number of beta testers to try out the website. So far all the core parts seem to work with creating new projects as well as listing, joining, discussing and updating existing projects. Automatic forum creation, displaying only the forums for projects you have joined, adding new requests and voting for reprint requests all seem fine.

We are tuning the layout and usability aspects based on feedback now, and will add more options and functions during June. July will be a testing month, and then perhaps in August we might be ready to release the site.

Issue 2: After Essen 2008

Today we got back from Essen, and as usual we had a very good time. We played a lot of great games and met many friends, both old and new. The best part of working with other gamers is that business meetings are never only about business! This is especially true at an event like Essen, where news/rumors of which games to look at and which games to avoid travel very quickly.

Some of our favourites at the show, in no particular order:

Krakow 1325 AD
Aronda
Robotory
2 de Mayo
Dominion
Uruk: Wiege der Zivilisation
Steel Driver
Heads of State
Le Havre
Bushido: Der Weg des Kriegers

A very good (and very long!) write-up from Essen:
